Philippines: Apo Island Pilot Survey
South East Asia Expedition: Pilot
Apo Island has the fantastic reputation of being one of the most successful community run marine sanctuaries in the world and as such has been well documented by the global science community. It seemed like an ideal area to study as a part of our 2012 pilot surveys.
While the reef was in serious trouble 30 years ago due to unsustainable fishing practices, it has managed to recover and became one of the healthiest reefs in the country after a sanctuary was established in 1982 and more sustainable fishing practices became the norm. Now the island is home to over 650 species of documented fish and 400 species of corals (most of the Philippines 450 species of corals can be found in this area).
