One Tree Island Survey

Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea Expedition: Survey 19
About 20km east of Heron Island sits One Tree Island. The whole of the One Tree Reef and the surrounding waters (500m from the edge of the reef) is a Scientific Research Zone. It has been established to provide a unique opportunity for long-term field studies at a site that is free of any other human disturbances. To access this area one must acquire a permit from the GBRMPA.

The Australian Museum began research at One Tree Island in 1965 while the Research Station which is managed by the University of Sydney was established in 1976.
