Cook Islands Survey

Humpback Whale tracking
Rarotonga, the Cook Islands is home-base for humpback whale researcher Dr. Nan Hauser and her team of scientists who are studying the migration patterns of these endangered mammals. Our divers joined Dr. Hausers team during the short 2 week window that the region is visited by passing humpbacks (Megaptera novaeangliae) and learned how satellite tagging of the whales helps authorities to learn about the mammals movements and to better zone marine parks accordingly.

In 2014 the Cook Islands announced the creation of world's largest marine park at the opening of the Pacific Islands Forum, a vast swathe of ocean almost twice the size of France and bigger than Alaska! These protected waters (over 2 million square kilometres) will provide a great survey site for the SeaView cameras as we'll as the humpback whale researchers.
